As you can see there's not that much difference apart from "subject" shortening to "su" and the initial URL format prior to the separator.MBChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10118411601012829953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3803450478721222413.post-70371584267214435462020-04-24T09:03:00.000+08:002020-06-08T07:54:31.003+08:00Stay COVID Meeting SafeI've had a number of people asking me recently about using recently popularised Apps due to COVID-19 in personal situations. In my personal opinion, I would steer away from both Zoom and Houseparty in particular, use something that is tried and tested like Messenger, Hangouts, Facetime or WhatsApp and ensure they're up to date as the latter two have also had hacking issues in the past due to people not updating after identified security breaches.

Both Apps are very popular at the moment and have had security and privacy concerns raised.

Houseparty

has been reviewed by security experts which have said: "it's probably safe".
It has safe security options but it is up to the end-user to implement them correctly.
Having said that if you read the fine print Houseparty uses your personal data and advertising as their income (nothing is free), there have been reports of users having their login details for Netflix and Spotify accounts compromised but these are currently unfounded accusations.

If you have installed the app

I would recommend resetting any password where you're using the same email address and check Have I Been Pwned.

Zoom

is rather popular at the moment and has had a history of security issues, here are a range of concerns since mid last year:

Most commonly the result of connected but no internet access

Here are a few I've found that have helped me I'll list them in hopefully the most appropriate order:

Local Network Mapping/Cached

Annoyingly sometimes you can have an issue with DHCP and your MAC address due to an update. To get around this you can connect to a new wifi access point or network cable and perform updates

Wifi Power Settings

Press WIN + X

Click on the "Additional power settings" link

On the selected radio button select "Change plan settings" > "Change advanced power settings"

Under "Wireless Adapter Settings" > "Power Saving Mode" reselect the setting to "Maximum performance0"

I've had some issues with the Australian landline or mobile regular expression in my previous post as more numbers have been made available so I've started using this expression instead:

^\({0,1}((0|\+61)(2|4|3|7|8)){0,1}\){0,1}(\ |-){0,1}[0-9]{2}(\ |-){0,1}[0-9]{2}(\ |-){0,1}[0-9]{1}(\ |-){0,1}[0-9]{3}$

Below are some details I found useful for enforcing correct number formatting when entering details in some Google Forms I've had to create:

Select the "Chrome Settings"/burger menu button in Chrome > "Settings"

Type "shutdown /i" to display the Remote Shutdown dialog box (the Shutdown.exe file found in the Windows directory)

Click the "Add" button to enter the associated computer names you wish to shutdown/restart or click "Browse" to open the "Find Computers" dialog box

Under "What do you want these computers to do", click "Restart" or "Shut down" and options for warning any logged in users.

Select an appropriate reason for the restart or shutdown from the list and enter in any details to be logged in the "Shutdown Event Tracker" section

Using the Command Prompt

To restart or shut down a remote computer and document the reason using the command line
you will need to follow the process below (Win7):

Select the "Start" button

Click "All Programs"

Next select "Accessories"

Click "Command Prompt"

Type the following into the command line:

shutdown /[r|s] /m \\ComputerName /c "Comment" /d [u|p] <xx>:<yy>

/r = Shutdown and restart the computer

/s = Shutdown the computer

/m = Specify the target computer

/c = Comment on the reason for the restart or shutdown.(512 characters max)

/d = [p|u:] xx:yy Provide the reason for the restart or shutdown.

p = Indicates that the restart or shutdown is planned

u = Indicates that the reason is user defined

If neither p nor u is specified the restart or shutdown is unplanned

In a any business you’ll end up with a job reference or numbering convention and a folder structure as the business grows. This can get more and more difficult to search through when moving documents around in Google Drive as there is currently no function to search after you select "Move to".

A simple solution to this process is to use the star function in Drive or searching via the naming convention.

Both methods work effectively but depending the situation one will be more efficient than the other.

The Starring Method

First select the item or items you want to move into the folder

Next search for the folder you want to move the items into, select the folder and star it as well,

Next select “Starred” in the sidebar and highlight the items you want to move and drag them into the folder

You can check their location in the details sidebar

Unstar all the items once you’ve finished

The Search Method

Please note this only works if you’re using a naming convention or a common thread in the items.

In the situation where you’re using job numbering across files and folders you can use the search bar and enter the job number or common details into the “Item Name” field and search

From the results you can move the items into the folder

If required you can use a combination of this search and the starred method from here to narrow down the results as well and selecting the “Starred’ checkbox

The version I'm talking about is the original App Launcher from Google that resides on your desktop Taskbar not in the Chrome browser:

Back to the issue:

If at some point you get an error that stops your Chrome App Launcher from launching and instead launches a standard window you should just need to correct the link so that the App Launcher works again. This can be done by completing the following steps:

Locate the shortcut that's not working, whether it's on your desktop, Quick Launch Toolbar or Start Menu.

Right click the shortcut and go to "Properties"

In the "Target" box go to the very end of the path and type " --show-app-list" i.e. it should look something like this: "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --show-app-list"

What Are Chrome Apps/Extensions?

Chrome Extensions are small pieces of software that integrate with Chrome browser giving it more functionality, while Chrome Apps are complete applications that use the Chrome browser as a GUI and connect to the external website for the coded processes and functions.

What is LucidChart

LucidChart is a flow-chart web application that can be integrated with Google Apps. It's simple to use once you understand how sharing works between LucidChart users (similar to Drive) and it saves time in generating flow-charts for internal workflow processes, customers, marketing and documentation purposes.

Adding/Embedding LucidChart in Google Sites
To display a LucidChart document inline on the Intranet you need to complete the following steps:

LucidChart

Once the document has been reviewed and is ready to share publicly on the Google Site select the "Share" button (top right corner)

Select the "Embed" tab and select the "Publish Link" checkbox

Look for the code that starts "src=" and select and copy everything the parenthesis:

I have about 10 draft posts that have been sitting there waiting to be finished, one since I started this blog, so here's a quick one:

Chrome Management has become a lot more functional recently. Originally this functionality was only available to Chrome devices like the Chromebook but it seems they've opened it up to any device with the Chrome browser installed.

For better control over which Apps and Extensions can be installed in your Google Apps network you can "Force Install", restrict, recommend and block which Apps and Extensions you want you users to have access to based on the OU they're under.

You can manage Chrome extensions through your Google Admin Console OU settings under:

Device Management > Chrome > User Settings > Apps and Extensions

You might also find the "User Experience" and "Content" sections useful.MBChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10118411601012829953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3803450478721222413.post-89488449891305580172014-10-19T19:45:00.000+08:002017-03-05T18:33:34.786+08:00Filling the G-Apps: Vertical Text in Google SpreadsheetVertical text in Google Drive is not something that exists yet however you can do within it's standard formatting however you can produce the same effect using a calculation where "LABEL" is the text you want displayed vertically:

=ARRAYFORMULA(CONCATENATE((MID( "LABEL", ROW(INDIRECT("YY1:YY"&LEN( "LABEL" ))), 1)&CHAR(10))))

In Google Apps for Business Gmail you have 2 options for applying domains but they have their own restrictions.

Add-on Domain
Will give you the ability to add any email address from an applied domain to a user but we need to manually add each email address to each user. It also means that Google Apps can be accessed using these domains as well i.e. https://mail.google.com/a/companydomain.com.
The only drawback is that you need to manually add the domain as you add each User or Group.

Alias Domain
Automatically adds the email address to every user & group in the organisation but you can't use the domain for any address other than the user name i.e. useralias@companydomain.com rather than user@companydomain.com or request@companydomain.com.

NB: Whilst the above statement is also true of Google Drive the following points are only about Google Drive Sync:

● There are currently no management tools available
● It is not supported when installed on a server
● Scope and granular functionality don't exist beyond what a basic user can see
● The local synchronisation service whilst it seems fairly reliable and it doesn't quite interfear with resources as much as something like Dropbox. It's not extremely fast, it's not a snail's pace but if you have 30+ users all working on non Google Docs documents they might not all be synchronised in a reasonable time
● Unidirectional synchronisation settings. While any files you place under the root folder will synchronise from a local computer up you can't tell it what not to synchronise at the secondary folder level or any subsequent folders
● There is no connection or issues with Google Drive Sync between Google Drive and local network security permissions so they need to be maintained separately

While it's fairly simple to use, you need to understand if you don't consider your setup correctly it could easily be a nightmare for a network administrator.

Currently Google Drive Sync is only designed for personal use.
